|“Disciple continues to transform lives within the Trinity church family, and those lives are now transforming our Church – Local Preachers have been raised up… new Home Groups formed… exciting outreach ministries started… and a whole lot of growing, excited Christians set loose on the world."
Rev Dr Neil T Oosthuizen, Senior Minister, Trinity Methodist Church, Linden, Johannesburg
DISCIPLE1 – becoming disciples through Bible study is a 34-week introduction to, and overview of, the whole Bible. During this time the student will:
& As a daily discipline, read almost 60% of both the Old and New Testaments;
& Study weekly notes, written by top United Methodist Church (USA) scholars and theologians;
& Watch a 10-minute DVD by top British Biblical scholars;
& Discuss the readings, notes and DVD-teaching;
& Engage in creative Bible study with the rest of the group; and
& Apply the truths gleaned from holy Scripture to their daily lives.
The local course is led by a trained facilitator (although many churches find it far better to use two facilitators for each group), who simply makes sure that the group follows the programme for the session, and does not stray too far from the planned DISCIPLE1-journey, and co-ordinates any practical arrangements, etc. In order to facilitate a DISCIPLE1 group a facilitator must have been on a DISCIPLE Facilitators’ Training Course.
The DISCIPLE Facilitators’ Training Course is run once a year in Midrand, Gauteng (it is also presented in other parts of South Africa). In this two day course prospective facilitators are taken through the ethos and process of DISCIPLE1, and actually experience two lessons. Practical facilitation skills are taught – the registered DISCIPLE facilitator is fully-prepared to lead a group back in his/her own church.
DISCIPLE2 – into the Word into the World is a follow-on course for those who have completed DISCIPLE1. Completed in 32 weeks, DISCIPLE2 takes the disciple through the books of Genesis/Exodus and Luke/Acts. Not only are these books studied in detail (through daily readings, notes, and DVD-teaching), but the disciple is challenged to reflect on his/her own spiritual disciplines and on how various Sabbath-principles can better be expressed through a faithful Christian walk.
The DISCIPLE2 Facilitators’ Course is a half-day course added onto the initial facilitators’ training. In order to register for the DISCIPLE2 course you must have completed the first two days of training.
DISCIPLE3 – remember who you are follows the same structure and process as DISCIPLE1, taking the disciple through the prophetic books of the Old Testament and the New Testament letters traditionally attributed to Paul. A special emphasis is placed on community throughout the study.
DISCIPLE4 – under the tree of life focuses on the Writings in the Old Testament (1 and 2 Chronicles, Esther, Nehemiah, and the poetic books e.g. Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes) and the Johannine books in the New (the Gospel of John, 1, 2, 3 John, Revelation) as well as James and Jude. An important focus in this study is worship.
DISCIPLE5 – Jesus in the Gospels takes the disciple through the life of Jesus in an interesting, challenging and life-growing way.
A registered DISCIPLE Facilitator is also qualified to lead the last three studies of DISCIPLE.
The DISCIPLE Facilitators’ Training Course and the DISCIPLE2 Facilitators’ Course take place in late October each year. Register your future DISCIPLE facilitators today by simply completing and returning the attached Registration Form, or contacting the DISCIPLE Gauteng office:
