Jesus Urgent & Unfiltered

“Jesus: Urgent & Unfiltered”: video and audio sermons, and sermon series guides, for this series from Trinity Methodist Church, Linden

'Jesus: Urgent & Unfiltered' - A sermon series from 6 October to 24 November 2024

In everything in our faith, Jesus goes ahead of us. Jesus doesn’t follow on after we have spoken, rather, Jesus is the reason we speak, the drive behind everything we do for the Gospel. Jesus is urgent on our lips! This Series on Mark takes us through the Lectionary readings through chapters 10, 12 & 13, a series of narratives, stories and miracles that are unfiltered – that is, they are mostly very challenging to our faith, but if they are taken on board fully, they have a huge amount to give into our lives and faith. That’s why the title of this series is Jesus: Urgent & Unfiltered.

Mark’s Gospel starts with a proclamation: The Good News about Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God (Mark 1:1). But in chapters 1-7 only evil spirits recognise Jesus as the Son of God. In chapter 8 Peter and the disciples also see it, but when Jesus tells them in chapters 8-10 that he must suffer and die, they don’t understand and when Jesus is arrested, they all run away (ch. 14).

Finally – while being crucified – Jesus is recognised as the Son of God by a Roman soldier. Many times in the Gospel we read Jesus asking (and sometimes commanding!) that his identity as Messiah be kept secret. Why did Jesus do this? Many believe it has to do with timing in his public ministry, perhaps to be able to preach as widely as possible before the Roman authorities clamped down, perhaps it was so that he wasn’t accepted for the wrong reasons or wasn’t reduced to the role of a magician, or a wonder worker.

What we do know is that Jesus came to change lives – to change the world! – and lead people to a way of greater love and suffering service to others. In the Gospel of Mark where Jesus is urgent in his message and unfiltered in his challenges we see his plan, not to start a new religion, but rather to start a political, social, religious, artistic, economic, intellectual, and spiritual revolution that would give birth to a new world.

Christ asks each of us: “Who do you say that I am?” We each have to come to that moment of deciding who Christ, and God through Christ, is for us. Intellectually accepting that there is a God is only one step of many in a life revolutionised by Jesus, the one that has the power to completely change us is when we acknowledge God’s active presence in our lives.
